about

Where the Angels Once Were (live sessions) is a new album of surprising and creative duets from multi-instrumentalists Gary Barwin (winds) & Mike Hansen (percussion). What does it sound like? Angels on saxophone, with cigars. Angels hovering over an old radio, a brake drum, or placing a toothbrush on a snare. Sometimes they lament and make feather sounds. Sometimes they howl through a cloud or ride like Hell’s Angels. What is the sound of the angels falling, narrowly missing a mall? An angel winging through trees? An angel with free jazz in its teeth? An angel gliding over water with a knife in its back or carrying the golden hour in its pockets. This is a suite of four extended strange entanglements, spooky free jazz at a distance performed by inventive instrumentalists with ears big as wings.

Recorded at Abandoned Luncheonette Studio, Hamilton, Ontario.
